Adrian Granados: Broner Asked To Move Fight To 147

Adrien Broner spoke about wising up and maturing as a fighter but it seems bad habits never die.

According to Broner's opponent, Adrian Granados, the February 18 bout between former sparring partners will now be contested at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. This developed after Broner reportedly fell ill during training and was thrown off his weight reduction schedule. The bout was originally to be fought at a catchweight of 142 pounds. It will now be a welterweight fight.

Said Granados to Ring TV during Thursday's conference call:

“It is actually at 147. It was 142 but it’s 147 now and it’s just the way it is.”

Granados also said that it was a 'take it or leave it' offer so he had no choice but to say yes because he wanted the fight so badly:

“And it was kind of a take-it-or-leave-it offer. So I’m obviously not going to pass up on this opportunity and I accepted.”

Granados has fought thrice at welterweight but is winless in three bouts at 147. However, Granados impressed with solid performances against quality welterweights: draws against Kermit Cintron, draw against  Lanardo Tyler plus and a split decision loss to Brad Solomon. The highest Broner has fought since losing to Maidana was at 144 against Shawn Porter. Broner lost that bout by decision. When Broner fought Ashley Theophane last year, he failed to make 140 pounds and was stipped of his junior welterweight title. Broner stopped Theophane in 9 rounds.

The change in weight obviously changes the picture of the fight. Broner may have taken the easy way out but given Granados' confidence, he may have something underneath his sleeve to take this fight. Well of course he had no choice as he said. He couldn't pass up on a big opportunity like fighting a big name like Broner.
