Carl Frampton Named Ring Magazine 2016 Fighter Of The Year

When it rains, it pours for the Jackal.

After being named as 2016 Fighter of The Year by several media outlests including ESPN, Belfast's Carl Frampton was named as the RING Magazine's Top Boxer of the previous year.

Said the RING in an article:

"So the final tally: Two fights against two elite, previously unbeaten opponents in hostile territory, two victories.... No other fighter had that kind of year. That’s why Frampton edged fellow candidates Terence Crawford, Roman Gonzalez, Vasyl Lomachenko and Manny Pacquiao for Fighter of the Year honors."

The Jackal had a breakout 2016, unifying the junior featherweight titles against Scott Quigg in a massive U.K. fight in February before moving up in weight and capturing the featherweight title against another previously unbeaten foe in Leo Santa Cruz last July.

Said Frampton upon hearing the announcement:

“Obviously it’s a huge honor. Toward the end of the year I picked up fighter of the year on some websites but THE RING Magazine, that’s the one. I’ve very, very proud of that.”

The Jackal then posted his proud moment via Instagram:

To top his elite ring achievement, Frampton agreed to an immediate rematch with Leo Santa Cruz, despite defeating the latter in a rather convincing manner. Frampton beat Santa Cruz by majority decision although most observers felt he should've won by unanimous decision.

Frampton summed up his 2016:

“I had an amazing year last year. I unified at 122 and moved up and fought a great fighter at featherweight in Leo Santa Cruz. The year went pretty much to plan. It couldn’t have went better.”

The Jackal now hopes to continue his string of success on January 28th when he faces Santa Cruz again at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Santa Cruz-Frampton rematch will be the second fight in the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App's exciting 2017 schedule:
