Different Scores For Different Folks: The Kovalev Ward Scorecard

Andre Ward beat Sergey Kovalev by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 114-113 in favor of Ward.

But two days after the fight, people are still talking about it. Andre Ward thought he won. Sergey Kovalev thinks he was robbed. What really happened?

Kovalev was comfortably up in all three judges’ scorecards after 6 rounds: 59-54, 59-54 and 58-55. But  Kovalev won just one of the judges’ total 18 rounds in the second half of the bout. What happened? Let’s go to the stats. Here’s the total punches landed per round courtesy of the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App:

According to the punch stats, Kovalev outlanded ward 52-36 in the first half of the bout. But Ward connected more, 80-74 in the final six rounds. The American also outlanded Kovalev in four of the final seven rounds of the bout.

That could be what the judges saw.

Many rounds were close. Some gave credit to Kovalev’s power punches and attacking style. Others favored Ward’s more calculated approach. More economical but more accurate. More jabs too. Take a look at the post fight stats courtesy of the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App:

For the other people who watched the bout just as closely, it was a different story. Of 60 media scores polled, 44 scored the bout in favor of Sergey Kovalev. 20 of them scored it 115-112 in favor of Kovalev.  There were 23 media persons who shared the judges score of 114-113 but 14 of them gave it to Kovalev. What about the fans?

The fans too had their voice. And their voice was heard on the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App.Fans scored the bout a draw at 114-114. But they scored the final round 10-10. Had they given it to Ward, like the judges did, the fan scores would’ve matched the judges’ scorecards. Take a look at the fans scorecards:

The judges say Ward. The media say its Kovalev. The fans had it even. It could have gone either way, really.

We knew it was going to be close. Until the lines had closed, the betting lines were almost even: -185 for Ward, +165 for Kovalev. Translated to implied probability, that's 36.76% for Kovalev and 63.23% for Andre Ward.

64% of the fans at the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App picked Andre Ward to win. 92% of them picked Ward to win on points. They picked the winner correctly:
