Late Power Surge Helps David Benavidez Stop Denis Douglin

We told you not to blink on this fight and we were right.

Just when Denis Douglin had taken David Benavidez to unchartered waters and tested him, the 19 year old phenom turned on the heat in the final two rounds. The result? A dominating closer by Benavidez which yielded a 9th round knockdown and the eventual stoppage of Douglin in the 10th and final round.

Douglin used his experience to keep the fight close in the first 8 rounds. He used an even head-body attack to keep the hard hitting Benavidez at bay. But Benavidez was never discouraged. Instead of wilting under the pressure of his first headliner, he found his groove in the 9th and began landing body shots and uppercuts. Douglin felt the power and finally hit the canvass in the 9th. Sensing his opponent had not recovered, Benavidez went for the kill in the final round and got the 15 stoppage win of his 16 fight pro career.

Douglin failed to upset Benavidez but he surely exceeded people's expectations. Many felt he was the toughest test of Benavidez's young career. But most believed he get stopped anyway.
