Leo Santa Cruz: I Want To Prove That I'm Better Than Carl Frampton

On January 28th, Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton run back their scintillating 2016 encounter that left us breathless. That rematch will be an opportunity for the Mexican pressure fighter to avenge his first career loss and reclaim his world title.

But for Santa Cruz, winning won’t be just a chance for revenge. It’s also a venue to prove his doubters wrong. Said El Terremoto:

"I have the loss in my head. I don't just want to do it for myself. I want to do it for everyone who has doubted me. Once I prove them wrong and win this fight, then I'll be proud of myself.”

"I'm going to show everyone what I've been working on. I want to prove that I'm better than Carl Frampton. If everything works out, we'll get the victory.”

With his father Jose back training him for a full camp, Leo is confident that he’s going to get the victory. The elder Santa Cruz is suffering from bone cancer and wasn’t well enough to assume a full-time training role during the first bout. This time round, Jose’s back and father think’s he will be the difference maker:

"I am happy to be part of Leo's training camp again. I think that was the major difference in his last fight. I'm back pressuring him again and making sure he keeps the pressure on his opponent.”

Leo Santa Cruz is known as one of the sport’s best pressure and high output fighters.  In their first encounter, he outworked Frampton 1002 to 668 in total punches thrown. Leo also outlanded Frampton 255 to 242 in total punches landed. Despite those, it appeared that Frampton landed the more telling blows. He outpointed Santa Cruz 206-191 in power punches landed. That was the difference in the bout:

Aside from having his dad back in his corner, Leo believes he knows what to do to beat Frampton in the rematch.  Said Santa Cruz:

"I think I have to land more clean punches this time. I'm going to work the body more and break him down. I'm going to sit on my punches a lot better. I couldn't land my punches clearly and with enough power.”

Leo also revealed the attitude he’s bringing to the fight:

"I'm going to fight like this is for my first world title. I'm going up there as a nobody and I'm going to go make a name for myself. I'm coming with that kind of hunger. I’m going to show everyone what I've been working on. I want to prove that I'm better than Carl Frampton. “
