Mikey Garcia: I'll Take Lomachenko Fight At 135

There were no signs of ring rust or whatsoever.

Mikey Garcia was explosive and destructive. The Oxnard standout became a three division world champion with his third round annihilation of Dejan Zlaticnanin in the Frampton-Santa Cruz 2 undercard last Saturday night. Prior to the fight, there were questions on whether Mikey had to take another tune-up fight before gunning for another world title. Garcia said nevermind, he was always ready. He was correct. Now Mikey intends to gun for the big fights, that is if the weight is right.

Garcia has declared that he is willing to take on two-time Olympic gold medalist and current super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko if Loma does make the move up to lightweight. Currently, Loma is linked to an April title unification against Jezreel Corrales. After that, there are rumors that he may be moving up to 135, in presumably in preparation for a possible 140 pound showdown with Manny Pacquiao sometime in the future.

Said Mikey Garcia to BoxingScene.com:

"I would definitely take on a challenge like that if he comes up to 135."

However, Garcia isn't sure if Top Rank wants that fight, especially since Bob Arum had been campaigning for a Pac-Loma showdown last year. Lomachenko said he needed at least a year to prepare for a megafight with Pacquiao. He may have no time to meet Garcia in between. That may not be a good idea.

Added Mikey:

"He's still at 130, I'm at 135 now. If he decides to move up, and they present me with that opportunity - we'll take it. But it's not up to me, it's up to him to move up. I'm not coming down. If anything he needs me at 135. I'm not coming down to 130 and I haven't heard anything from his promoter or his camp mentioning my name."

"But if he decides to move up, it would definitely be a great fight. He's got a lot of skills, tremendous skills. I have a lot of skills that people haven't even seen yet, so that would be a great opportunity to show [them]."

A Lomachenko vs Garcia fight is a very interesting prospect. However, with Top Rank eager to keep all the marbles to its stable, it's probably not part of Arum's plans. Even Carl Frampton has thrown his hat in the Lomachenko arena, saying yeasterday that he wants Loma when he makes the move up to super featherweight.

What do you think of a match-up between Vasyl Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia?
