Nacho Beristain: Julio Jr. Can Win

The pieces of HBO's Cinco De Mayo weekend showcase are slowly filling up.

Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena has been named as the venue for the all-Mexican showdown between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6. Then Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. also revealed a very crucial piece of information regarding the fight: his new trainer.

Via Twitter, JCC Jr. announced that legendary Mexican trainer Ignacio 'Nacho' Beristain has agreed to work with him for the Canelo fight:

The Hall of Fame trainer is considered one of the greatest ever. He is well known for his work with the Marquez brothers, specifically four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez. In the course of his famed career, Beristain has steered many fighters to world titles but working with Julio Jr. may be one of the most difficult.

Chavez has worked with different trainers during his turbulent career. The Son of the Legend has trained with his uncle Rodolfo Chavez, Dan Goosen, Robert Garcia and Freddie Roach in the past. But while he's achieved some success, Junior has never really sustained it because of his personal demons.

Incidentally, Beristain once predicted that Canelo would beat Julio Jr. Now Don Nacho says that Alvarez is still the favorite but that Junior can pull it off. Via ESPN Deportes:

"Canelo is still the favorite, but I've always felt the betting odds don't matter... it's what you work for, it's the effort you make when you think about winning. I think we're going to work hard for this fight," Nacho said. "(I asked him for discipline) of course, and that's what I'm most interested from him, to see if it is true (with his inner change to succeed)."

Beristain added:

"It's not easy, it's a challenge, we have to work intensely with him because now he's in the best mood to train. I asked him to put all the meat on the grill, the intention is to make him realize that he has to win, that if  there are no oversights and he prepares well - he can win, it's going to be a great fight."

Without doubt, Canelo vs Chavez Jr is going to be a great fight. But as to whether we're going to see a better Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., it's not going to depend on the trainer. The problem with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has never been the trainer, really.
