Eddie Hearn: Only Amir Khan Stops Brook-Spence From Happening

The fight between IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and undefeated mandatory challenger Errol Spence is close to being a done deal. And according to Brook's promoter, only Amir Khan can derail that fight.

Said Eddie Hearn:

‘The only way we would not do it is if Khan comes about, but he wants a tune-up fight first.

Brook and Khan have long been domestic rivals in Britain but until now, the two have never fought each other. Nor have negotiations between them really gone deep and serious. Most recently, the two were rumored to be in talks again. But after a social media spat on purse percentages, the talks fizzled out again. And with Khan signing a different tune (a tune-up fight before Brook), Brook had decided he won't vacate his title:

‘It’s no secret that it is a struggle for Kell to make 147 pounds and I felt he would be better off at 154 (light-middleweight). ‘But Kell does not want to vacate. Spence is who he wants to fight and that fight is very close to being made."

A purse bid for the Brook vs Spence bout was scheduled on Tuesday. But the IBF moved it seven days back to enable bot parties to make a deal of their own. Hearn is confident that deal will be forged very soon:

‘A fight with Spence is the firm favourite and I’d hope to make it in the next week.’

The IBF had earlier declared that Spence would fight for the title, with or without Brook. Said IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker via Boxing Scene:

"(Brook) has to fight Spence, he can't ask for an exception or a unification. Once we call for the purse bid then he can't do anything else. He can give up the title but he can't ask for an exception to fight anybody other than Spence."

Tucker added that if Brook vacates, Spence will fight the next highest ranked contender which in this case wold be 3rd ranked Andre Berto because 2nd ranked Jeff Horn is likely to fight Manny Pacquiao next.

So we're likely going to see Brook vs Spence in May. Unless of course Amir Khan makes a surprise.
