Errol Spence: Brook Was Trying To Find A Way Out

Errol Spence has fired the opening salvo.

Shortly after his title fight with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook was sealed, the 27 year old American from Texas took some shots against his next opponent. Said Spence:

“He’s a great fighter, but he’s getting too much credit for fighting me. Who else was he gonna fight at 147? Nobody. Who was he gonna fight at 154? He couldn’t fight someone else at 147, because if he didn’t fight me they would say he was ducking me. “Who was he gonna fight at 54? There was nobody for him to fight at 54, no big names, the names he wanted. So he had to fight me. Everybody knows he took Triple-G for the money, so I do think he’s getting too much credit for taking this fight.”

Brrok moved up two divisions to fight Gennady Golovkin last September only to lose by knockout. He suffered an eye injury during that fight, forcing him off the ring for quite some time. When Brook was healed, there were talks that he would be moving up to 154 but he's since decided to keep his belt and fight his mandatory challenger in Spence.

According to Spence, Brook tried to find his way out of fighting him. Added the 2012 Olympian:

“He was trying to find a way out. First he was looking for another title-holder. He was looking to fight either Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman. But they’re fighting each other, so he was looking for Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao wasn’t interested, so he was trying to fight Amir Khan. Then that fell through, so I was high last option. There was nobody at 154 for him to fight. Canelo already had a fight with somebody and the rest of the guys are with Al Haymon. He really didn’t have any options but to fight me, so that’s where he went.”

Prior to getting the Spence deal done, Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that they held talks with domestic rival Amir Khan and Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto. Khan and Brook have been talking a fight for years while Cotto was looking for an opponent after James Kirkland got hurt. Unfortunately, both deals fell off the table and as Spence said, that's where it went. Now Brook has to face the Truth. And Spence's next fight will be Special.
