Punch Output Didn't Matter At Ortiz-Berto 2, Punching Power Did

When you have the kind of KO power that Andre Berto has, you don't need to land so many punches to win. All it takes is that one perfect shot that will end the night abruptly.

Such was the case during Berto's rematch with Victor Ortiz on Saturday. Ortiz had masterfully boxed around Berto in the first three rounds of the bout and outlanded Berto 27-10 in total punches. But after Berto timed Ortiz with his signature upperut in the fourth round, Ortiz was dropped and hurt badly. Vicious managed to get up but he went down a second time moments later. Ortiz beat the count again but this time, barely and referee Jack Reiss halted the bout at the 1:14 mark after Ortiz failed to respond when asked if he still wanted to continue.

Overall, Ortiz was 29/120 in punches landed/thrown while Berto was just 17/123. Ortiz also outjabbed Berto 18-5 and launched a more balanced attack with 15 punches connected to the head and 14 to the body. In contrast, Berto went head hunting almost exclusively, landing 15 of his total 17 punches to Ortiz's head. However, none of those stats mattered because Berto had other plans.

Berto's only statistical advantage over Ortiz was in power punches connected at 12-11. One of those power punches -that big uppercut in the fourth, changed the complexion of the fight and sent Ortiz to dire straits.

Victor Ortiz threw and landed more punches. It appeared as if he won the first three rounds and even added a knockdown as a bonus. But it was Andre Berto who won, not by punch stats but by his punching power. Berto was outpunched but he landed the hardest punch of the night. And that was the difference in this fight.
