No KO: Andrew Tabiti and Keith Tapia Go The Distance

For a bout that pitted "The Beast" versus "The Machine Gun" and one that had both fighters with a combined 22 KOs in 29 total bouts without a loss, Friday's colossal cruiserweight clash unexpectedly went the distance. Save for the 8th round flash knockdown scored by Andrew Tabiti, both heavy hitters stayed on their feet most of the night.

Keith Tapia tried to blitz Andrew Tabiti, throwing twice as many punches as his opponent in the opening round 42-21. Tabiti meanwhile stuck to his game plan of moving in and out, using superior hand speed and movement, while working behind the jab. By the third, Tapia's work rate diminished and Tabiti started to take over by consistently landing the jab and effectively connecting on his counter shots. With Tapia plodding forward all fight long, the Beast outjabbed the Machine Gun 28-11 and landed more power shots 87-62.

As the per round punch stats showed, it was all Tabiti from round three onwards.

And save for the 99-90 score by one judge, the two other judges saw it 97-92 with the 8th round knockdown an insurance policy for Andrew Tabiti.

This battle of previously unbeaten fighters was supposed to unleash one real contender but after the bout, it was clear that while both have the potential, each is still a work in progress that may need more tests before progressing to the championship level.
