Vasyl Lomachenko Delivers An Explosive KO Win over Rocky Martinez

Vasyl Lomachenko turned Puerto Rican day into a Ukrainian celebration with an explosive fifth round KO win over Rock Martinez on Saturday night.

The two time Olympic Gold medalist dominated the fight from start to finish and ended the night with an picture-perfect left uppercut-right hook combination that knocked the Puerto Rican champion out cold in the fifth round of their WBO Junior Lightweight title bout in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Lomachenko was heavily favored to beat Martinez, with 95.3% of the fans at the Throwdown Scoring Mobile App picking him to win a second title in as many weight classes. But not many expected the fireworks that ended the bout. Only 45.75% of those who picked him thought he would win by KO and only 5.46% said Loma would stop Martinez in the first half of the bout:

Martinez was coming off two wars with Orlando Salido, the man who beat Lomachenko in 2014. But instead of posing a challenge, he was overwhelmed by Lomachenko’s brilliance. The Ukrainian was more accurate ( 43.1% vs 19.1%) and doubled Martinez’s punch output in each of the five rounds and out-landed him 87-34 overall when the fight was stopped.

With the win, Lomachenko became the fastest boxer to win world titles in two different weight classes. He did it one fight faster than Japan’s Naoya Inoue who won a second weight class in his 8th professional bout.
